Carolee Friedlander started her namesake company, known for its faux pearl jewelry, in 1974. Initially selling her costume necklaces, bracelets, and earrings through a handful of department stores and one storefront, Carolee now distributes its pieces through more than 700 US department stores. The firm also provides private-label products for such companies as Polo Ralph Lauren. Acquired in 2001 by Retail Brand Alliance, Carolee Designs is focusing on building its wholesale business domestically and overseas.
