Some experts cite the overwhelming amount of information available on the internet about collecting watches as one of the main reasons for this spiked interest, while others say it is the numerous online sellers and traders of vintage watches and yet others simply point to the growing number of millennial watch lovers who are more interested in the story behind the watch than in the forever aspect of owning a fine watch The importance of vintage watches was the subject of a recent discussion in New York with President and CEO of Omega, Raynald Aeschlimann At a private presentation to very select journalists, Aeschlimann, along with Omega's International Brand Heritage Manager, Petros Protopapas, brought some of the most iconic and legendary timepieces-once owned by prominent Americans-from the Omega Museum to hit home the power of vintage watches.
Among the timepieces: Elvis Presley's diamond-bezel white gold Omega that was gifted to him by RCA Records on the sale of 75 million records and that sold earlier this year at auction to Omega for $1.8 million; an Omega gifted to and worn by President John F Kennedy; an Omega owned by the co-founder of Kodachrome; one owned by an American astronaut and more "Interest in vintage watches has always been important, but today everyone is so much more aware of vintage watches than ever before," says Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO globally of Omega.
One of the key Omega watches recently up for auction by Phillips-and setting the record for the most expensive Omega watch ever to sell at auction-was a watch that belonged to Elvis Presley While the budget for the new museum is about $1 million, Aeschlimann is quick to point out that the earmarked sum does not take into account the already built fantastic architectural building of the already acquired collection of amazing watches. .
