This time, we're turning the spotlight on ethical accessory label, Bar Jewellery McKay set the business up in London, where all the jewellery was to be made in local factories by skilled artisans and is all, where possible, made from recycled silver that has been refined Having worked in the industry for almost a decade before she started her line also helped McKay to notice something the market was missing: "I think that many people are becoming tired of fast fashion jewellery so for me, the gap is for accessible jewellery that is made with integrity and lasts the test of time" Jewellery too, has given McKay the opportunity to more creative than she might have in ready-to-wear.

"I still work for brands as a ready-to-wear consultant so I have a continued connection with the fashion industry, in many ways the two are very similar, but I treat jewellery more like wearable art There is the opportunity to be much more abstract with a piece of jewellery which is something I love The personal connection people have to jewellery is something I didn't think about too much when I started my business, but I love the intimacy of being involved in customers decisions about the jewellery that defines important moments in their lives" While creating extremely covetable jewellery that is accessible is clearly important for McKay, this wasn't central in her decision to start the label, which is, in many ways, what makes Bar Jewellery so special.

What's next for Bar Jewellery?In the short term, McKay is planning to grow the brand on an international level, with the collection soon being sold in stores across the globe, but looking further ahead, the designer is aware that jewellery may not always be her sole focus. . Source
