Early man coined the usage of the pendant necklace. Things like animal teeth, stones, and arrowheads were attached to a string and then tied around the neck as a form of jewelry. Ancient Egyptians also practiced wearing the pendant, but they used elaborate pendants on their necks, usually very large in size, made from gold or other precious metals, and oftentimes depicting a form of a god. During the Middle Ages, the cross was the most common form of a pendant, obviously to demonstrate religious membership.
