Engagement Rings

An engagement ring is more than just a piece of jewelry. Aside from its exterior beauty, such a ring symbolizes love, commitment, faith, and promise to a loved one, something no other type of jewelry can claim. Symbolic jewelry dates back to the time of the ancient Romans, who wore iron rings to represent strength. The ancient Greeks coined the placement of the romantic ring on the fourth finger of the left hand, where the "œvena amoris" (vein of love) apparently was linked to the heart.

In the ninth century, Pope Nicholas I required that gold engagement rings be given at the time of betrothal. The ring was to act as a visual representation of the groom's ability to look after his future wife, mostly in terms of money. The very wealthy would include diamonds in their engagement rings, and the diamond's unsurpassed toughness represented the unbreakable bond between a man and a woman to be married.

Men's usage of engagement rings is relatively recent. Beginning in World War II, young soldiers at war used engagement rings as reminders of their loved ones back home. Usually, the man's engagement ring doesn't include many gemstones, and is generally pretty simple. A simple gold or silver band is common.

The wearer of an engagement ring is more than just beautiful, they are blessed, faithful, and happy, and they want the world to know about their new life about to begin. This wonderful symbolism is what makes the engagement ring so unique and so special. Anyone who is to be married should not miss the opportunity to wear such a unique and special ring in anticipation of a new blessing that has come their way.
